This year we went 3 weeks before Fat Tuesday and had a blast. We got to see the first parade of the year....Krewe de View...which was so much fun. The crowds we huge, but we were told nothing like they are on around Fat Tuesday. Locals told us that it is hard to even get into a restaurant or bars during the peak of Mardi Gras and that we came at the perfect time. We stayed at Hotel St Marie which is just a block off Bourbon Street....great location and quiet enough that once you hit the bed....you could sleep without disruption. Plan on bringing lots of cash....it is expensive...but the great things in life are! We plan on many return trips in the future!
We've been to NO Mardi Gras 5 times loved it each time never stay past sunday before fat tuesday crowds get way too big and not as much fun( even sat now very crowded)
stayed at st. marie last time , hotel provincial before both cpl blocks off bourbon but good for price

Hotel St. Marie on Toulouse(sp?) is fantastic. We have stayed there several...get a balcony room...Royal sonesta is fantastic too! but the balcony rooms are booked by corporations for Mardi Gras.
