    Question Hot tubs at Hedo

    Hi again,
I've just put another thread up so I hope I am not boring people. I have read on another message board that it is possible (and according to the thread, probable) to catch all sorts of very nasty deseases from sharing the hot tub with 50 odd couples. The message said that the tubs are not cleaned properly! Can anyone tell me if they have heard of any problems with people who have been in the tub - also can people let me know whether they think the tubs are clean and safe!
    Thanks,

with the amount of people that use the tubs, the % of problems are less than your local pool. they heavily chemical the pool just for the reason of heavy use. you have a better chance of getting food poisoning from your local chi chis.

I think they are "safe". But I'm not an expert. Closed for a number of hours per day (when I was there in '02, the hot tub was closed daily until noon or 1, as i recall. Don't know what time the closure started.

Clean? Varies... don't forget people DRINK while in the hot tub and one spilled Dirty Banana can could cloud up the water considerably. People who arrive after the spill will usually jump to other conclusions as to why the water is not as "clean" as they might expect.

They clean it twice a day. Once in the morning and then again around 5pm. I'm sure that it is as clean as your average public hot tub. When we were there in July it was quite itchy. We were always in it right after they cleaned it and we ended up having to go to the pool instead. There was some chemical in it which made my skin very dry and itchy. I did hear other people complaining too. I heard that the usual pool guy was on vacation so maybe that was the reason. I wouldn't be worried about catching anything though. I would however sit on a towel when not in the water. Germs can probably live in the cement pores or on chairs.

We can also attest to the fact that the hot tub is cleaned daily. We went in just after they opened it after treatment and the chemical was very strong (eye watering) and the water very hot, so much so that you could not stay in...I suspect it was more than the 105 F max. recommended. It does settle down as more people use it though. You are probably safer in the hot tub than the ocean with regards to bacteria.

As a self proclaimed "cootie freak" all I can say is that I accidentally ingested some hot tub water one afternoon (don't ask!) and suffered no ill effects from it.I am pretty sure that something I saw floating in the water one day was not from a spilled drink though! It was not mine!Hot tubs can be dangerous for petite light skinned light eyed women who "may" develop a lung issue from breathing in vapors but I would bet that is pretty rare. Can't say I noticed that many ladies which would fall under that demographic btw.So if you have concerns, just hop in when you can smell the chlorine.Honestly it is so strong at times that it is almost unusable but I am glad they err on the side of caution. Now being too darn hot is another issue entirely!Once you go,you will likely love the hot tub scene as much as the rest of us do!

The reason pools & tubs smell so much of ammonia (and other smells) is because the chlorine is reacting with our bodily fluids - i.e. PEE!! So anyone who says they don't pee in the pools should be given a "Really now?" look.....

We own a hot tub here and I can honestly say being a hot tub owner, they do a pretty darn good job keeping those things clean there. Yes you will have floaters of some sort from time to time and the water may look questionable with sunscreen, booze and other stuff, but overall I was pleasantly surprised at how well they cleaned it up daily and got it ready for the next night. I never had any issues with the cleanliness causing any skin problems (or lack thereof) or any issues with infections or sicknesses. I wouldn't worry about it at all. If you're a germ-a-phobe, probably not a good idea to go to a nude resort. LOL

For anyone concerned that the stuff floating on the top of the water is semen:

The specific gravity of human semen is 1.028 which means that it sinks in water. Science!

One of the most common illnesses linked with hot tub/spa outbreaks is infection with the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Healthy people can develop Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, including ear infections or skin rashes, after exposure to hot tubs that have not been properly chlorinated, according to the CDC. Called "hot-tub rash," the infection often appears in the shape of the bathing suit a person is wearing, because the suit holds the contaminated water, said Michele Hlavsa, an epidemiologist at the CDC's Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch. - Taken from http://www.livescience.com/42450-rec...-hot-tubs.html

So, we nekkid hot tub enthusiasts are less likely to get an infection from "One of the most common illnesses linked with hot tub/spa outbreaks". Yay!

Great thread, and some interesting information to learn being a hot tub owner myself, but the concerns expressed about the hot tub are from 2003.

Still, old thread or not, great to have current info informing folks the hot tub is clean and safe. We were there in September (2014) and found it to be really well maintained.

Chlorine will make you itch and make your eyes water. When it bubbles in water it gasses off quickly which is why it is so "rough" when they first open it in the afternoon. That tremendous noise you hear in the bathrooms is the water pumps running the filtration system. I had a fun experience meeting the guy they flew in from Miami to work on the pool systems. He said that it's the largest filter he's ever seen, largest in Ja. for sure and that pool has a huge capacity for filtering out the good from the bad.

I've watched them open the hottub and people smearing themselves with SPF 250 thick as cream cheese and then get into the hottub, instantly cloudy, sends a sheen over the entire tub. The damn thing is big it would take a lot, a real lot of other stuff to affect the water quaility.

Now the "other forum" you speak of, who are these malcontents? LOL. Were you on Tripadvisor? I love that site for everything but Hedo, mostly people who didn't enjoy themselves because the people are too friendly and nekkid I suppose.

    Cheers
