    Sandy Bottoms Ontario

    Sandy bottoms in Ontario.
We went for a week at the end of july. The advertising and website are glitzy and slick, too bad the place is just one notch above a dump.
We arrived on a Monday. Met the hostess and were read the rules. Cool.
We were shown to our deluxe 2 queen room with bathroom and shower. It was tiny. We barely had any room to move.
It was equipped with a fridge, mircowave and coffee maker, but no coffee.
We had to pay another 120.00 for air conditioning, which barely cut it. It was a cheapy standup unit from canadian tire.
Right outside the room was the septic system, and a field where people tent. So if you like the smell of raw sewage, this is the place for you.
We found out that evening, that you have to own a large enough vehicle to transport 300 beer - why 300? Figure 24 beer per person, per day plus another 6 for good luck.
There were 2 episodes of extreme drunkeness where 1 person was actually hurt, and I guess asked to leave the next day and one person (who turned out to be an employee of the place) got wasted on beer and almost fell into the fire.
So if you cant pound down 12 beer in 12 minutes, this place is probably not for you.
In the morning, beer cans and trash everywhere.
You have to bring in everything. Make sure you bring extra towels. The hotel rooms are non housekeeping and we had to beg for towels for the shower.
The bar b ques area all old, and falling apart. Lucky to find a propane tank that's full. There are 2 commercial fridges on premises if you are camping, or in a cottage, you can store your food there.
We had a great giant screen tv, but it wasnt hooked up to any service. Wifi is ok. Managed to catch the news back home.
All the theme nights never happened. We were disappointed. Total lack of organization. One couple did perform on music night, but with everyone around talking loudly, it was impossible to hear them. Talk about a total lack of respect.
The lake is not a lake, its a big pond.
THe place has some hard sided boats, bring your own floats if you desire.
The dock looked like it was recently repainted, but with the wrong product, so its all peeling. Dont walk there with bare feet.
This place is highly over rated. We heard all kinds of bull shit stories etc, we saw and heard very little action, I've seen more public sex in main stream bars.
THe place needs work. Needs some polish. ANd repairs. and maintenance. The owners should be on premises.
Maybe we'll go back one day.
Sorry Sandy, but that was our experience.

Oh, also, the staff was supposed to swiffer the room before new guests arrive, well, next time they need to swiffer out the spiders and webs. But I left them, as the webs trapped the ants that were coming in. Oh, and watch out for the snakes.....

Oh boy....I was just looking at perhaps giving that place a shot but no, that's not at all for us...that sounds like just too many issues....not worth the $$ and drive then.

Thanks for your review. I found this helpful.

Hey, no problem. We would maybe go back, if we can get a deal, and maybe go with friends. At least this time we'd know what to expect. I can say that the hot tub was nice (since it was fixed), the small pool was nice, the pond is nice for floating, the main house and kitchen areas are nice, just watch out for the Ministry of Forestry helicopters that orbit around the area.....black helicopters.LOL

we have been a few times over the years and always enjoy ourselves. Our experience differs from yours (holliandmikemtl) but everyone sees things different, we have always booked the small rustic cabins. For this is a camping experience getaway and do not expect to be staying at the ritz. The owners seem to try make it better every year with their improvements. we will be booking another long weekend next year.

Don't forget you're in the woods here. Spiders and ants and snakes.... you're in their habitat. As for the cleanliness of the units... new housekeeping this year, and things are so much better! Let your vacation be persuaded by the awesome people who go here and the friends you meet, not by housekeeping.

In response to your review, I have some corrections and comments.
“In the morning, beer cans and trash everywhere.” We are a self catering resort. It is up to the guests to pick up after themselves, which doesn’t happen late at night when everyone is partying. Every morning, things were picked up and tidied at some point, always by 10 or 11am.
“... but no coffee.” If you’d asked, you would have been given coffee packets. Otherwise, take your coffee basket to the lounge and take as much coffee as you’d like for your morning coffee in room. That’s pretty simple.
“It (room) was tiny.” We work with what the grounds had when the owners bought it. Sorry it was too small for your liking. Most guests don’t spend much time in their room, so it’s not an issue for most of our guests. Sorry you require ‘more’.
“..2 episodes of extreme drunkeness.” Well, they aren’t driving anywhere, and only have to stumble back to their room. That’s what some guests are looking for. Sorry if that’s not for you. “..1 person was actually hurt and… asked to leave”. Not true. No injuries this summer at all, and no one has been ejected this year either. Get your facts straight, holliandmikemtl. “..who turned out to be an employee..” No, also not true. He is a regular at Sandy Bottoms, and perhaps friends with the owner. But not an employee.
“...can’t pound 12 beers in 12 minutes…” What a ridiculous comment. Many guests don’t drink at all, or minimally, and they enjoyed their vacation at Sandy Bottoms. I feel like you are just reaching for things to complain about now.
“..have to own a large truck to transport all that beer.” Really? You don’t want to drive the 15 minutes into town mid week to resupply? That’s on you then. We are not licensed. And if we were, you’d likely complain about the price of a beer. I don’t think we can win on this one… Most guests love that we are self-catering and not licensed, as it keeps the overall cost of vacation down.
“...had to beg for towels to shower.” Beg? Really? Every time you asked, it was handled. Way to over exaggerate.
“...2 commercial fridges if camping or in a cabin.” The fridges are for everyone: rooms, villas, or wherever. Sorry if you thought you were being excluded.
So, for those reading this review, take it with a grain of salt. Or perhaps a whole salt lick. This couple arrived with an attitude and a sour look on their face, and were not happy the entire time they were there. Judge for yourself and read some other reviews. Others really like the place and their experience. Not many places in Ontario were you can explore your hedonistic side in a safe, comfortable atmosphere. Suggestion: Arrive with an open mind and a sense of adventure and you’ll love Sandy Bottoms, and likely return again and again.
