    Wifi in rooms?

    Hi all,

When we were at Hedo our first time five years ago, the wifi was expensive and so-so. Wondering what it's like now. We're not looking to stream Netflix, just email and nominal web browsing in the morning. (Personally, I'm the computer guy in the family, and I'm not going to log on while I'm at Hedo, but the Mrs is anticipating worried email from the kids.)

How is the in-room wifi? Is it free?

We were there in mid April. The free Wifi was at best sketchy. It worked the first two or three days but would not work the rest of the week.

I always buy the premium for the room. Free Wifi only seemed to work well sitting in the dining hall

Just returned from Hedo a few days ago, the free wifi worked fine in the room during my visit. It went out for a few hours one day, but that was the only problem. No need to pay for the premium service.

wifi in the rooms seems to be dependent on room location in relation to wifi antenna for the room block.

I have no problem with the wifi in the rooms except when I was in 1223 which seemed to have special shielding. Last time I was there, a special hub was in that room, for just that room. I do not stream, so the free WhyFi is just find.

We were there a couple of weeks ago and WiFi was poor, even after upgrading to the premium. Our room was 1129 (almost at Sandals) and it was very spotty. Disappointing because I have to work for a couple of hours each morning.

    Glad you asked.
We were there at the end of April. Internet in H block was up and down. On our check out day as I was leaving my room, I notice a couple of cable rats from the local telecom company working on the routers. They were punching down new cable. When I asked what was going on (OK, I was a former telecom worker), they told me that they were up grading the system from cat 5E to cat 6 (feeds for the wireless routers). They had a wheel barrel full of the old cat 5 cable beside them. They said that the heat was so bad that the cat 5e cable was breaking down, and every-time they walked across the roof, more circuits would fail. Now from my days in the industry we never used standard cat 5 cable (what they had in the wheel barrel), outdoors exposed to the elements. I sure hope they had the stuff in conduit (not likely though). The new cat 6 didn't look like outdoor cable. The hot Caribbean sun will toast it in quick order. As well the routers and punch down blocks were not enclosed in air tight boxes, simply in cubbies under stairs.
So, in a while, for a short time, the internet should improve greatly. This was in H block, I assume they would be doing the entire resort. They also had several cases of drinking water with them, could be a tough job on the roof of the building.
