    Outside the resort

From reading many of the posts, we would guess that a lot of people would say “why would you want to leave the resort?” But we have never been to Jamaica and would like to explore Seven Mile Beach. Can you just walk down the beach through Sandals and other resorts? And are there any other places close by that would make for a good day trip (we wanna be back before nightfall to enjoy some Hedonism)?

You can walk the beach all you like you bet They kinda want you back before dark ...
We did go to a local restaurant for Lobster Omlettes that where amazing an only 8 bucks each - it was called "Just Natural"

Hummingbird sanctuary was kinda neat but it was 40 bucks .. and you need to like birds ...

you can walk the beach past Sandals, past several resorts. There is a Margaritavlille on the beach, and you can just take a taxi back to Hedo if you don't want to walk back. The tour desk has a list of excursions, but make sure to ask how far the site is from the resort, you don't want to spend several hours driving to the location and returning to the resort.

Yes you can walk the beach, the first 10 feet of shoreline is public property in Jamaica (including Hedo...but since it is the end of the 7 mile beach off site foot traffic is rare). If you walk past sandals you will be on the 7 mile beach. If you want to walk bloody bay you will have to use the toad to get to a public access. We recommend a cab, a few bucks and 5 minutes you will have access to the beach. The 7 mile beach is more commercial while the bloody bay beach is more rusti. They are both fun to walk and safe.... but as said in a previous post, during the day....we would not be off resort on the beach at night.

We would recommend going to ricks cafe, yes it is very touristy, but fun to see. If you go, think twice about cliff jumping....injuries do occur (yes I am one of them....broken ribs and sternum are not fun....maybe I should not have belly flopped. Lol). We have also went on the zip line tour. It was fun, but it took to long for us. We were gone most of the day with the bus ride there, stopping at a number of resorts to pick up others (and drop them off after. A taxi would have much faster, but more expensive. Zip lining is almost to Monday, on the trip from the airport to Hedo, keep the time it takes for an example. There is also a flea market kind of thing about a block away from Hedo. Walk to the main road and go left.
Most days, you can hire a water taxi to the island off shot and buy lobster from the locals, they will cook it for you and you can sit on the beach and enjoy it. We have also had a few great dinners off resort, usually runs about 100 usd. The one love pub crawl is a lot of fun and shopping in downtown negril can be fun as well. The cat cruise is also a blast and some trips the go to ricks.

Keep in mind that the sand gravity is very strong at Hedo....it can be tough to break free and get off resort and you will be shocked how fast your trip will fly bye

We take a taxi to Margaritaville, have lunch and some dirty bananas, then walk the beach (left). Some pretty cool bars, and other places to be seen. Not too long of a walk, and you'll be back at Hedo by the afternoon.

It's really fun to walk the beach, there are tons of little restaurants and bars. Food and Red Stripes are very affordable. Those little thatched roof beach bars are the best. If you walk down far enough you can go to Times Square, Negril's own shopping mall to get tourist gifts and coffee. It knocks off a couple of "to do" things at once. Across from Coco La Palm is Best in the West jerk chicken. It is the best.

For us there are a few must-do excursions. first off we love the catamaran cruises as a break from the hedo routine, with the sunset one ending up at Ricks Cafe so you can kill two birds with one trip if ricks is on your list. Also sunset dinner at Ivan's Bar at the Catcha Falling Star "resort." Here is the link but if you google the sunset dinner pics you will see why we love it. https://www.catchajamaica.com/ivans-bar/ And then finally we always have a lobster lunch at the Office of Nature. Perfect little bar hut on the beach with a great lunch. there is also a long line of shops selling the usual stuff along the beach by Office of Nature so if you wanted to get a walk in you could order lunch and then take a half hour stroll. Personally I just love sitting at the bar and enjoying the ocean breeze. You can cab there from Hedo or take a boat taxi. It is right down the road from hedo. They dont have a site but here is the trip advisor link with plenty of pictures. Hope that helps!

If you want to experience something off the beach, we really enjoyed taking a day trip to Mayfield Falls. It's a fun, refreshing, and educational trip in the hills.

We went on a beach horse back ride. Wife liked that. The horses were a bit small for this tall cowboy. Took catamaran to Rick's. I jumped 3 times. Awesome. Took the other catamaran snorkeling on the reef. Other than that never left.

For day trips from Negril, Mayfield or YS Falls. Further afield you could go to the south coast beaches, Black River and Pelican Bar but that would be a long day.

If you truly want to see Jamaica, add some days onto your trip instead of spending a full day away from a resort you are paying through the nose for. I have driven all over Jamaica and I love it there. It's really beautiful, Negril is not an aberration in that regard. 2-3 days exploring the South Coast would be an awesome counterpart to time at Hedo. It is much less visited and you won't find the overwhelming number of hustlers you see where there are large concentrations of tourists. Island Car Rental will deliver a car to you at Hedo for an extra $40, you can make a loop through the southwest part of Jamaica and drop it off at the airport. If you have the money and are fearful of driving, hire a driver. If you are at all adventurous you won't be sorry.

The lobster season is closed from April 1 to June 30 annually for the spawning season. Sadly, there will be unscrupulous vendors who will depend on tourist not knowing this and they still hunt and cook. Please do not buy during the closed season.

We walk down to Drifters or the Boat bar a couple of times during the week. Its about midway to Negril from Hedo. An hour walk on the beach from Hedo. They play live music. Its free and a great way to have a few beers. You will probably not want to walk back to Hedo. Just walk to the main road, it parallels the beach and grab a cab. It will take you two minutes to get a cab, as every other vehicle is a cab on the main road. Make sure its a red license plate. When you get a cab anywhere, make sure they will not rip you off. They will try to charge you $20.00 anywhere. It is actually only a $2.00 fare from Hedo to downtown, per person. Because you are tourist, they will try to stick it to you. We usually negotiate $5.00 to $10.00 for a ride back. Depends on how far down the beach we have walked. If they do not except, tell them we will get another cab. They will reluctantly accept. Private drivers are more expensive. Hedo will offer their driver, but we walk out the front gate and grab one of the drivers waiting on the street. They will drop you off and pick you up if you go to Ivans, or Ricks at a certain time. Ivans and Ricks is on the West side, thus a 10 or so minute drive. Probably a $30.00 round trip to Hedo. They will pick you up at a specific time if you are not comfortable waving down a taxi. Where ever you go, finding a cab will be simple. I swear, half the people on the island are employed as cabbies.
