    New Check In Policy

For about our last 10 trips we have stayed in Negril on our day of arrival in Jamaica. Always show up at Hedo first thing the next morning after a good night’s sleep. Never been an issue. We know we aren’t going to get a room until after lunch but always welcome to store our luggage in the bell hop closet until then.

Everything changed this trip. We arrived by cab at about 8:30 AM. (Have done this many times before.) The guard told us there was a new policy and we were not allowed on the property until 11:00 AM. Having already checked out of our Negril hotel we didn’t know what to do. We told the cab driver to unload our bags and we would sit on the curb by the guard shack until 11. So we sat. About 20 minutes later one of the bell hops recognizes us and rolls the luggage cart down to the guard shack and says, “this is a new way to check in”. We explained we were told we can’t come on the property. He took our luggage to be stored in the bell hop closet and left us on the curb. (He did apologize for the new policy.) Another 20-30 minutes goes by and someone comes down to the guard shack and tells us we are going to be allowed to wait in the lobby but can't enter the resort. After about 15 minutes in the lobby, someone tells us we are welcome to enter the resort. To protect those that “helped us” by breaking the rules, I won’t name any names but thanks.

If the whole process wouldn’t have been so absurd, we would have been frustrated. We just laughed at the impression people must have gotten seeing 2 people sitting on the curb with their luggage. Later in the week we ran into a mid level manager we know and she confirmed the new policy of not allowing new guests on the property until 11:00 AM. Imagine if you were a first time visitor and this was the greeting you received upon arrival.

Wow - this sounds insane (the new policy that is). I can understand limiting access until a published check-in time, but not allowing paid guests to be able to wait in the lobby? Not a smart way to win over new friends and keep existing ones IMHO...

I have been there, checking in and checking out, on a Sat, and it can get pretty hectic for the staff in the mornings. Presumably this cuts down on the number of people "loitering" in the lobby, and speeds up the transition of guests checking out. I realize it's not always busy, depending on the day of the week, but it's probably just a blanket policy.
You do however now have the option of remaining at your previous resort till 11:00AM. Thanks for the heads up koolio.

Good to know for our next trip as we always stay off site the first night.

When did this happen? I'm getting mixed messages different dates literally 2 days apart and wondering if this is something now or something they tried to do and stopped again (has been known to happen). Fingers crossed it is the later or at least they let peeps into the resort.

I'm usually not either, but nice to know. I often recommend peeps stay at coco la palms or somewhere else if they are getting in really late. 8pm or later arrival really doesn't make sense to pay for a full night. If this is a current change in policy, then I'll add that to the info I give them.

Maybe an uninformed staff member as someone on Facebook today went up to the desk and asked and were told that the check in policy is the same, if your early you can enjoy the resort and just come back for your room key later.

It might not matter to many people, but is relavent to some others. I experienced an early arrival in May this year, having taken the now cancelled LAX-MBJ flight, and only spending four nights at Hedo. I arrived around 8:15AM Saturday morning, without having a confirmation from my travel agent as I was booking it late Friday afternoon on the way to the airport.

So I spent the first 1.5-2 hours up by the lobby straightening out the reservation, then when done with that, there were no rooms available yet, so I grabbed what I needed from my bags, and headed to the point on the nude beach, stripped down, and relaxed in the sun for three hours before checking about a room again.

While that flight is gone, I’m contemplating the Frontier RDU-MBJ flight for next April, and it arrives before 8AM, so it’s possible I’d be running up against this “policy change” if indeed it’s official.

Will keep watching what people report regarding this. If I stay on-island pre-Hedo, shouldn’t be an issue as I don’t come over till around 11-11:30 anyways.

Really folks, how many hotel properties would actually allow you to check in at 8 or 8:30 AM in North America. I think 11:00 AM sounds more than reasonable. Most check-ins are after 3:00 PM. We have checked in 9:30AM a few times and while allowed, it did seem a little odd and somewhat unexpected.

Agreed, but how many hotels will throw the customers to the curb before check in rather than providing a place (the lobby for instance) where they can wait? This is the part of the original report I have trouble with.

We agree with you I can understand them not having a room ready or checking you in but at the very least they could hold your luggage and allow you on the resort.

If this is in fact a new rule I can’t see it lasting. To leave people sitting at the entrance gate with their luggage due to an early arrival is an extremely poor public relations policy!

We arrived about 9:30 last Friday and didn't have an issue. Room wasn't ready until late afternoon, but had no problem going to the beach.

I checked with Hedo today as we are arriving at 6am at Sangster Airport in December, and sitting on the curb is not how we expect to ever experience the start of a vacation...especially after travelling all night. The vanilla resorts never have issues with regards to holding your baggage until your room is ready and we have always been permitted to use the resort facilities during the waiting period. We received confirmation from Hedo today, not to worry, that there will not be an issue with our early arrival. Our bags will be kept in the secured room, and we shall be able to enter Hedo as we have in the past.

We are at ease again and trust that nothing has changed. Hedo’s customer services still top notch. Whew!
