    David & Qian - October 2018

    David & Qian’s October 2018 Trip Report

I am sitting in a conference room during a business meeting typing this Hedo trip report. Trying to make the time pass quicker, trying to recall a funner time, in an other-worldly place. It is 3:17 in the afternoon, and as my meeting drones on I cannot help thinking about what might be happening in the nude pool at this moment. How busy is the hot tub? Are there people waiting for pizza? is the new playroom in use? My thoughts are like…‘there are people in the hot tub right now having the best times of their lives...’

My meeting has been going now for about two hours and I am struggling. Badly. Returning to the office following a Hedo holiday is mind bending. Mind numbing. And listening to this discussion on pre-cast concrete procurement has made me question certain life decisions, and caused me to consider; ‘…is it possible we could just move to Jamaica….?’

Do not get me wrong, my life is not that bad. As I look out the window, it is a beautiful late October day outside; 85 degrees, bright blue sky, a hint of some rain clouds in the distance. Walking to the office, the breeze off the sea recalled the smell of the air at Hedo. It is a lovely day as it is every day here. Life is nice in Singapore. And that helps.

Singapore is perfect. No, really, it is perfect. Do not believe me? Google ‘Singapore’, pick any of the search results, and have a read: ‘Modern City’, ‘Best Airport in the World’, ‘Jewel of Asia’, ‘Best Global Business Environment’, About Singapore, Anthony Bourdain said “Spotless, efficient, safe, protected, controlled. A utopian city-state, run like a multinational company”. The accolades go on and on. And they are all true. Gang violence? Nope. Homeless? None. Drugs? Not a chance. Violent crime? There was a murder…some years ago.

Arguably, my wife and I live in utopia. Anthony says so. And if we want to leave utopia for a holiday, within 3 hours we have our choice of paradises. We are an hour flight from Indonesia. Two hours to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam. Three hours to the Philippians. The week before we traveled to Jamaica, my wife and I were in Beijing and Hong Kong. Katmandu, Ho Chi Minh, Bangkok, Jakarta, Manilla; all are 3 hours or less flight from Singapore. Phuket and Bali (yes, Bali) are less than 2 hours.

Singapore is great, lovely, exciting, exotic. A dream destination. And we live there. But on Saturday September 22nd we got on a plane to begin 30 hours of flying, and a 90-minute bus ride, that would take us to the lobby of Hedo.

I do have a goal with this trip report, so let me explain. More than our past four trips, on this trip we had several people ask us; ‘why do you come to Hedo from Singapore?’ And you know what? I struggled for an answer every time. Partly this is because the question was often asked in the nude pool, a few drinks in, while distracted by, let’s say…boobs. But even during civilized times at dinner or in the courtyard, I struggled even more with a reasonable response. And this has been unsettling for me. Because we actually do spend a bit of money, get on the plane for a few hours, put our bodies and minds through the travel, to get to Hedo. And I could not explain why.

So, my goal with this trip report: Try to explain why we go to Hedo. What is it about Hedo that keeps us coming back? Why, when travel is not getting easier, and it is cheaper for us to spend a week in Bali than to live that same week in Singapore, is Hedo still the destination of choice?

This is not a trip report that draws a conclusion that everyone will agree is their answer to, ‘why Hedo?’. It is my opinion. And I freely admit, my opinions change like my clothing. But right now, at this time, following this trip, this is my take.

We booked this trip three months out. We had hopes of upgrading our flights right away but when that did not happen, we held out hopes as the trip approached. In the end, we flew coach to Dallas. It was not all bad. We were in row 31 which is kind of the business-class of coach. Acres of legroom, and comfortable enough for the 15 hours in the air.

We stayed in Dallas for nine days before heading to Hedo. I had some work and family obligations there. Qian flew onto Miami to spend a short week with her sister who had traveled from Venice. The time in Dallas is mostly for me to adjust to the time change. I struggle with the 13 hours difference and would rather not spend time at Hedo going through that pain.

Qian arrived back in Dallas two days before our travel to Hedo. Ironically, we flew back to Miami to connect to Montego bay. By this time, I had begun recovering from a bad cold I had caught no doubt from the plane travel and stress on my body. But I was on the mend.

We arrived in Montego Bay noon on a Wednesday. I was not expecting the airport to be busy but went ahead and reserved Club Moday any ways. And we needed it. Immigration was not a disaster but we would have had a 30-minute wait, which we short-circuited. We do a lot of international arrivals and departures. Every time we get on a plane we need to go through immigration four times. We are comfortable with the processes. But arriving in Jamaica on holiday, it just feels so good to have someone holding your hand through the arrival process. One side benefit of Club Mobay for us; My wife, who still carries a Chinese passport, can have specific scrutiny when entering any country. And this is true in Jamaica also. Having a Club Mobay representative with us seemed to smooth the questioning.

Through immigration, we found our bags waiting for us. Did not break stride at customs with Club Mobay, and were escorted to the lounge where drinks were had. The Club lounge is nice, air conditioned, clean restrooms, and free drinks. But I do kind of prefer the pre-bus drink at Margaritaville outside a bit more.

Our transfer to Hedo was via Sun Holiday bus. We like the bus, and we like Sun Holiday the best. We had a 20-minute wait for the bus, which was about right to have a couple of drinks and use the restroom. The Sun Holiday bus only goes to Hedo. No stops along the way, and everyone on the bus is going to Hedo. This is why we take it. But an hour into the ride, it was clear I was going to need a restroom before we made it to Hedo. The Club Mobay drinks had caught me out. I quietly asked the driver if we could make a quick stop, and apologized to the one other couple on the bus. To my surprise and relief, the other wife said ‘Oh, good, I need to go also!’. We made a quick stop, we all used the facilities, and I bought everyone a beer as a thank you. Made the last 30 minutes of the ride soooo much more comfortable.

I guess we arrived at Hedo about 3pm. Check-in was uneventful except for that feeling you get when you step off the bus. You know the feeling; like, ‘I am here. I am really here’. Check-in was smooth, and we were handed our key to room 2227; ocean view premium with a balcony.

We walked to our room unescorted, which was a first for us. And we liked that. Felt like we were on our own right from the lobby. Our bags arrived about 15 minutes later. We unpacked properly.

We like the Hedo rooms. They are fine. Having moved out of China and now staying in hotels all over the world, we have seen some nice rooms. And by any international five-star standard, Hedo’s rooms are not luxurious. Even the premium rooms. But they are kept clean, the AC and plumbing work all (maybe most of) the time. While we were there, two blocks of ocean view nude rooms were being renovated. There were some workers and trucks in front, but did not have an impact on us.

For us, the room type does not really matter. Stay where you want, spend what you want. It is all about the same. We like the premium ocean view room for the balcony. We use the balcony every day. Coffee in the morning, rest in the afternoon, hangout on at night. A place to sit and watch the rain. Which we used a lot this trip, because it rained…a lot.

The enduring impressions of our first four days of our Hedo holiday are the rain, and the low resort occupancy.

First the rain. Jamaica was still getting the tailings of hurricane Michael, so every afternoon it rained for hours. People in the pool did their best to party-through, but it was tough. And At times, cold. Very cold.

Occupancy was the other issue. We have been to Hedo when the resort has been half empty. This was entirely different. On our arrival night Wednesday and the next evening, Thursday, the dining room was closed. And having the dining room closed in the evening does leave a kind of black-hole in the middle of the resort. Those of you who were at Hedo when the dining room was being renovated, know what I am on about. It is not horrible, but it is…calmer. During the day, the nude pool was largely vacant.

On our first night we ate at Pastafari, which we enjoy and was perfect for the first dinner. There is something special about that first night; walking up to the dining room, your wife dressed sexy on your arm, knowing this is the first of many walks to come. And Pastafari is lovely. It is civilized, comfortable, the food brought to you. There are short conversations with other diners, but there is kind of an un-spoken rule that if you are dining at Pastafari, it is because you want some alone time. Some romantic time. We were happy to be handed the menus and make the walk to the antipasto bar. Nice.

There is not much to say about our first four days at the resort. Just rain. Rain. And more rain. We went to the gym every morning. Took a nap every afternoon. Found moments to jump in the nude pool. Evenings were pretty early. Don’t let the melancholy text fool you; it was still Hedo so we still had fun.

Things changed over the weekend. The resort got busy.

On Saturday, life at Hedo was changing. The hurricane had made landfall and most remnants had cleared Jamaica, so days were drier. And new guests arriving hourly brought new energy and new eye-candy.

Saturday night, we were excited for the hats-and-heals theme. Qian has a particular outfit we both enjoy. But about 5pm the skies opened up one last time. We waited until about 8pm, hoping the rain would stop, but eventually gave in and traded our theme outfits for bathing suites and flip flops. We were perfectly attired for our walk to the dining hall in the now biblical rain. To our surprise, when we arrived to the dining hall, everyone was dressed nice and lots of people in theme. Dining room dress is pretty much; whatever you want to wear, you are good. But we felt uncomfortable in our beach clothes, when everyone else had made such an effort. Still not sure how everyone got there without getting drenched.

By Sunday Hedo was Hedo! Sunny was bright, blue sky, house was hopping. And the nude pool was the place to be. For those of you who have not experienced the nude pool on a sunny afternoon; it is kind of like a rap video, at the Playboy mansion, during Mardi Gras, in a pool. There were still some departures and arrivals, but the vide was definitely party/sexy/debauchery. There was a couple on a lounge chair poolside who had obviously not had sex in a long time, so spent most of the afternoon ‘catching-up’. There were ever changing husbands and wives sitting on the pool edge, being ‘appreciated’. This was the first afternoon Carwash was played. The line of women started at the steps to the bar and went to the shallow pool. The line of men waiting to be washed went around the back of the hot tub. I think it took five songs for every guy to go through the carwash, but we did see a couple of guys sneak back into line for a second wash. Smart

In the house for our week were; Topless Travel and Tom’s Trips/International Delights. In my last trip report, I wrote a bit about Topless and Tom’s, so read that report for more information. But the short version is; These two groups are great together. Book with one, and you get the benefits of both. I have said it many times and it is true; my only regret is I cannot give them both my business.

For this trip as the others, I booked through DennyP who uses Tom’s Trips. I used Denny for our first trip because I was reading his website daily. I thought I should support him. Denny booked me through Tom’s, so that is how we have gotten to know Scott and Cathy from Tom’s. Denny has always given me good service, and I am loyal, so the rest is history. But honestly, Topless deserves some of my patronage also. Mark and Carly do a hell of a job.

Sunday night was School Girl theme night. Another favorite of my wife’s and mine, and evidently many other people. Participation was very high for School Girl night. In fact, participation was quite good for most theme nights. Some of the costumes on Rock Star night were over-the-top good, but all nights had some outstanding looks.

As the week progressed, our holiday changed. Our nights became later, afternoon naps stopped, drinking increased, as did the socializing. Our mornings were consistent though. Up about 8:30am, get up to the gym about 9:30am. We like the gym. We both used the treadmills and weights. Get an hour workout in, and off to breakfast. Hedo breakfast is not talked about much, but should be. The selections for breakfast are varied, and it is a great way to start the day.

After breakfast we go back to the room, shower, sun block, nude pool. We spent much more time at the nude pool this trip. In the past we have been beach people, but this has clearly changed. I think for us, the nude pool is a party atmosphere we do not get in Singapore.

Topless Travel and Tom’s Trips had parties every afternoon at the nude pool. Topless brought a Sybian which was demonstrated one afternoon during a party, before finding its way to the playroom by the pool for any woman who wanted a go. At one point there was a que of about ten women…

PDAs at the nude pool were common this trip. Really common. And it was erotic. My wife and I are not prudes at all, but we are probably not going to be the first to ‘affectionate’ in front of others. But when there is so much activity around, you feel more…willing to participate. And there was lots of…playing…around all the time.

Music at the nude pool is much improved to our ears. The music variety is better. You will hear some newer hits in addition to the tried and true Hedo favs. Requests were taken. And the volume of the music seems better. They have struck that balance of loud enough to get up and dance, but not so loud that you can’t have a conversation.

The heated nude pool is interesting. There are times when the warmer pool is welcomed. Our first few rainy days were salvaged by the heated nude pool. Our apprehension with the heated pool is, when it is hot and the sun is beating down, and the pool is nuts-to-butts crowded, getting into the water can feel like getting into a soup. It is not refreshing.

In the evening, the heated pool is most welcomed. It has changed the atmosphere around the hot tub. It draws a lot more people to the nude pool and hot tub in the evening. It is clever actually. It is a more diverse social scene, spread out over the entire pool deck, not just around the hot tub. Pizza, drinks, hot tub, and now you can hang out in the pool and the new playroom. The hot tub at night is now not just the hot tub. The entire nude pool area has activity. I feel this will continue to evolve into an even more popular nightly hangout.

If the nude pool during the day is like ‘Playboy mansion Mardi Gras’, then the hot tub at night is something like an Eyes Wide Shut party thrown by Caligula. It is quieter than during the day (no music) and everything moves slower, but the intentions and activities can rival any porn you have seen. I know what you are thinking and yes, any porn. If you are not involved or participating, you are still welcome. Watching is often encouraged.

Other daily activities? We took a walk down the beach. Did not walk all the way to Margaritaville as we have in the past, but close enough. Catamaran sailing; check. Kayak; check. Snorkel boat; check. Nude pool; check and check and check.

Our evenings were a mix of wandering between the main pool deck, the court yard, and the piano bar. After a while, we would make our way to the disco hoping to find a party there, and you know what? A few nights there was. After the disco, the hot tub was the destination of choice.

Tom’s Trips offered a pub crawl. This is becoming a highlight of our Hedo trips. If you can, take the opportunity to visit a few local bars. It is a fun way to see a bit more of Negril.

I did have a hard day later in the week. I was being what my wife calls a ‘poop’. And boy, was I. At the time I did not really understand what was happening with me. But looking back on it there were several factors in play. I had a bit too much to drink, which is never good. At times my wife and I….lets just say, ‘I had some jealousy and trust issues’. To compound that, I was still tired from jet lag and travel. And, I was becoming a bit anxious about how long I had been away from home and work (20 days by this time). So, it was a buffet of nonsense in my brain, and I did cause a fight with my wife. Which is not only unusual for me, it is unheard of. I did recover, but I still feel guilty about it today.

I think there may had been a few people who felt I was not having a good day. Maybe they even knew my wife and I had words. But they paid no fuss and I have no doubt had they asked, they would had understood. People are that way at Hedo. Everyone tries hard to be understanding and honest with each other. They forgive, when forgiveness is earned. And they accept, when effort is made.

When people are as accepting as they are at Hedo, I mean truly accepting, it allows unusual freedoms. Freedoms to explore yourself a bit more. Let me try to explain this. Every person at Hedo is a ‘real’ person in the outside world who allow themselves to change, if even the tiniest bit, during their time at Hedo. It is not pretending. Quite the opposite actually. At Hedo, you somehow try to be honest with yourself, and become how you might wish you could be all the time. And this goes shockingly un-judged by other guests. I know this is a bit of a tortured analysis, but I hope my meaning comes through.

It is so easy to try-on different attitudes at Hedo. Do not feel sexy at home? Feel sexy at Hedo. Worried about career advancement at home? Not in the tropical sun. Kiss another girl? You might like it. Thought you were too uncoordinated to windsurf…or have a foursome? Have a go. Sing in front of a crowd? I could never do that…but maybe…

We all have hang-ups, anxieties, issues. We are all some distance from the person we wish we could be. We all want to have new experiences that are unimaginable outside of Hedo, because you can. Sometimes these experiences are life changing. Sometimes, if you try too hard, they cause you to fight with your wife. Every Hedo guest understands this. Hedo guests accept you as you are, allow you to live out fantasies, forgive you when you do get over extended, and look forward to building memories on those efforts.

As a resort, Hedo is far from perfect. Read through the forum posts and that is clear to see. But I believe the people that ‘get’ Hedo, who understand the Hedo vibe, see a piece of themselves embodied in the old resort. Hedo has a long history with the scars to show for it, as we all do. It has always been far from the best resort in the world. Even in the beginning. Remember that. Even today with the renovations, Hedo is trying to gain a glory it never really had. And that is ok.

To my eyes, Hedo is astonishing. Is it in a constant state of repair? Yes. Is the infrastructure antiquated? Yes. Are rooms small? Yes. Is the food good, but not great? Yes. But I could also be describing London. My point here is; new and 5-star are not better. Actually, rarely better. Age, even decay, has depth. Life. History. A soul. It is why driving a ’67 Mustang makes you feel special, and driving a new Ferrari makes you feel like a douche. It is also why Venice Italy is a place for lovers, and Dubai….isn’t.

Qian and I return to Hedo because we see ourselves as we see the resort. We see Hedo as beautiful, because it has faults. At the same time, we have experienced the patron’s attitudes. We have met guests who, without judgement, will always hand you a drink and give you a smile, even if you cannot carry a tune, do not feel comfortable looking in the mirror, or want to try that new position. There is endless encouragement. As Qian and I support and encourage each other. Qian and I are not perfect. That is what makes us perfect for each other…and Hedo.

Our trip was not defined by my bad day, or our fight. Really. Quite the opposite. We had a great time. We did learn a bit about each other as we do on every Hedo trip. And we had a lot of sex. A lot.

Will we be back? Of course. There was never a doubt. Hedo is a part of us. But mostly we will be back because Singapore is utopia.

You see, I purposely left out some of Anthony Boudain’s comments on Singapore. He also said; “One could be forgiven for thinking it’s a giant, ultramodern shopping mall. An interconnected, fully wired, air-conditioned nanny state. Where everything is beautiful and nothing hurts. And those things are … kind of true, especially if you read the [Singapore] papers or the carefully monitored [re: censored Singapore] internet. You look around the litterless streets, where everything seems to work just fine, and you think…‘Gee, maybe a one-party system is just what we need.’ You look at all the social problems and ethnic strife, street crime, drugs that Singapore has managed to avoid and you could think, ‘Is this the life we want?’. It ain’t my system, it’s not the world I want, but damn, it has its appeal”

And I agree with Anthony. Singapore is extraordinary and I am glad there is a city like it in the world. And everyone should visit it and see it for themselves. But the truly best thing about living in Singapore is not the endless summer, the cleanliness, or the security. It is knowing that some day we won’t. But until that day, Hedo will be the place we visit.

That is why we travel from Singapore to Hedo.

Wow! What an incredible, in-depth, from-the-heart, trip report. So thorough and real. Thank you.

Your report causes pangs of anticipation for me for my 14th trip which is still 220 days or so away but I like the build up as much now as I did for trip #1.

Plus, your travel schedules and stops prompt awesome memories of my recent (May-October) 10 country (including much of SE Asia plus Singapore), 178 day, 23 international flights adventures overseas and perhaps a little DIF which is usually reserved just for Hedo.

Your report is inspiring and informative and thank you again for sharing.

Great report, David. We were there the week following you and the resort was packed.

I guess since you travelled so much last month, you're not on Bliss this year? We had a moment or two with you and Qian last year (you enjoyed my wife's body stocking one night) Shucks we were hoping to run into you again.

Well, maybe hedo next april? Or perhaps dinner in Singapore one day?

Great report. Loved hearing about your home also. I really get what your saying about the place being old and having character. Lots of history there and we love being a part of that history, even if we can’t tell many about it lol. It’s our place to let loose and be ourselves in a way most may not approve of.

Absolutely one of the best, well-written, candid trip reports I have ever read! You brilliantly captured the feelings that so many of us have, even if there are at times, a few negatives. After reading the first few paragraphs I thought, this guy has the worst case of DIF I have ever heard of!

Absolutely outstanding. The quality of your report more than made up for the lack of quantity of trip reports in recent months. If or when we're ever to share our real Jamaica resort destination with our non-Hedo friends, I'm going to show them your trip report. You truly captured its essence.

What a great description of a vacation! Loved it! As I have your previous reports. I think very few people truly understand what makes Hedo great and why they keep going back. Your report will prompt many to think about it.

I hope we can meet a Hedo some day as I think we could have a great conversation.

Great report and it answers a question I was going to post on the forum and that is how does the heated pool affect the typical hedo day, specifically with the late afternoon migration from the pool to the hot tub.

Wow! David, your trip report was amazing!!! You should be writing books! I have been a fan of your posts and trip reports for years! I booked with International delights one year and totally agree with your opinion of Scott, Cathy and Tom's Trips! You are also spot on about Mark and Carly with Topless travel! Both groups are awesome!
We will be at Hedo in just 18 days, with WWW. I will finally get to meet the infamous Denny P!
Hopefully I will get to meet you and Qian one day! Reading your report makes the countdown to Hedo more bearable!

Well said! I'm going to be sure to share this trip report with a few "select" people. We will be back "home" in 48 days for our third trip. Your candid expression of why we all travel to Hedo hits all the right buttons. None of us are perfect. We all have our baggage and flaws...as does Hedo. What better way to blend that all together as "One Love" at a place where we are all accepted just as we are. Thank you!
