    Tipping The Staff

We are headed to HII July 22 and could not be more excited. One thing we are not clear on - tipping. What is the standard operating procedure? Do we tip the bartender(s) at the nude pool as soon as we get there or wait until departure? We want to be taken care of and have great service. How do we handle asking them to take care of a bottle we bring? Same question for the room - linens, towels, etc. The wait is almost unbearable!!

There is no tipping in Hedo. It is included in the price. The staff are great and will help you in any way they can, no tipping required.

Staff can actually be fired if they are found to be receiving tips. The staff will take great care of you no matter what.

There is a no tipping policy and employees are supposed to turn it down if offered... they can be fired if management finds out and chooses to follow through. The policy is intended to keep guests from being nuisanced by tipping all the time (great when naked and don't have anywhere to carry money) and also providing equal service to all guests regardless of how much they tipped a particular employee.

We tipped our bellboy out of habit and he didn't hesitate or look over his shoulder (we didn't remember the no tipping rule until after). We also left money on the bed for the cleaning staff, which they accepted and left us nice towel art and extra water bottles. We figured, they'd either appreciate the money or appreciate the gesture... putting their job at risk is their choice.

The generally accepted rule is to be respectful of the person you are tipping... don't do it in the open, in front of many people... keep it on the down low.

Also, some people have said that you can leave a tip at the front desk in an envelope with the employee names you'd like it to go to, or that it goes into some sort of tip pool... I have no idea how truthful this is, or how many of the envelopes make it to their intended employees.

In any event, you will be well treated regardless of you tipping or not... particularly since most people tip after receiving good service, not before. The staff are always ready to help you.

We have always tipped at Hedo, everyone from the dining room and restaurant staff to the security, maintenance and bar staff (could range from $2 - $10), would love to be able to tip everyone if we could. I believe it is money put to very good use and much appreciated as well as needed. We also bring all kinds of treats and trinkets to pass out for the staff to take home to their kids - once again much appreciated and needed, we just like to be able to give. We take about $200 USD in small bills and about another $200 in items. We have been there 6 times now and not once has anyone refused, rejected or been apprehensive about excepting it, but is always on the down low with a casual hand shake. I believe the no tip policy does create a no pressure environment as a trip to Hedo can very expensive and feeling like you have to tip can be a burden or strain on ones budget, it also does create that equal friendly service with no expectations like you have to walk around with a wad of cash all day just to get a drink or some service. At the end of the day, it really comes down to ones personal choice and budget.

Would like to know if anyone has heard of or knows anyone that has gotten fired for accepting tips here. Back when we first started going (about 8 years), we heard rumors of Delroy, the nude beach bartender, getting fired for accepting tips. Not sure if that is true as it certainly didn't slow down or stop the others from taking that hand shake around that time.

Hedo does have a no tipping policy and we do know of employees who have been fired for taking tips. We have heard that these employees have also been known to try to solicit tips...we have been asked a few times for tips and the next year they have been gone...

We do not tip (much) at hedo, we have left some stuff for the staff. All the extra toiletry items, candy, red bull and other stuff we do not want to bring home we do leave in our room when we leave with a note for the housekeeper. We have also given cash to the dining room peeps to set up a large table for our friends and us...it is usually decorated with flowers and our names so we assume that Management knows that something is up....but we also think that the employee "turns in" the tip because the service is pretty blatant...but who knows. We also bring stuff for the dive staff, not cash, but things that they can use (Orings, batteries, decongestant etc.)

Jamaica is a poor country, most people that work at hedo do not have as easy of a life as most of us that go there do, and they will probably not turn down a tip. If you want to tip, fine, you probably will not get better service, but the tip would be appreciated, however, before you tip cash, keep in mind that if the employee is caught taking a tip they could be fired. Working at Hedo is a good job for Jamaicans, granted long hours and putting up with all of us, but still a good job. If you do tip cash do it very discreetly. We have heard that if you give items (vs cash) with a note from you the employees can except them...so that is what we do.

We heard that Delroy's knee gave out and he had other health issues that prevented him from working at Hedo, however we also heard that Scumba was fired for taking tips...all this is second hand so we do not know for sure

I tip the bag handler and the house keeper but that's it.Management would be better off to have a box in the lobby for guests to leave tips to be divided by the staff for a Christmas bonus. They all work hard to keep the place going;especially the groundskeepers and maintenance personnel who likely never get tipped.

On our 3rd trip last October, I made a rookie mistake. We left our room and walked downstairs where a male employee who may or may not have been with housekeeping approached me. All friendly and smiles. He directly asked me what room we are checking out of. Not being quick of thought after 7 days at Hedo I told him. Within 30 seconds of walking away I realized what he did. He was going straight up to our room for the chance (good one too) that we left a tip for the real housekeeper (female) who was very sweet and helpful all week. Live and learn.

It was a pretty good move I have to admit, unethical though it was.

Not allowed but might discreetly sneak one of for extra good service or a quickie MFM.
