    Bug spray and/or alternatives

Been to Negril a few times and we are quite aware of sand fleas after a cooling rain or cooling temps at sundown brings out the lil biting buggers. In the past we have used Skintastic, Deep Woods Off. Just wondering if there is anything better than Off and the chemicals that are in it. We will bring both because we would prefer to keep the bites then the scratching to a minimum. I think I heard of something called Pumpkin oil for bites??? Thanks for everyones input.

Nothing is full proof, but I like the cutter lemon eucalyptus from this study. Don't forget your ankles and toes! And DON'T forget to wash your hands after applying! : o

Our family doctor recommended B12 tablets, 2 weeks before going...we have never had an issue...

I take B vitamin complex for a while before the trip BUT everyday I take garlic and tumeric.Bugs don't like me anymore. For local outdoor adventures in the woods at home I treat my clothes with permethrin .5% and or use Deet (Deep Woods Off or Repel).Deet will eat up some things so check the label. For skin application my choice is Picardin.Gonna try me some Lemon Eucalyptus though.

I think in 4 April trips I have encountered one mosquito and zero sand fleas. Not that I was looking for them.Staying away from foilage, especially at night,is key............

Last year, I was the poster boy for unsightly sand flea bites. I tend to wake up early to go to the beach. I heard from some locals that baby oil drowns the sand fleas that are no bigger than a grain of sand. One morning I plastered the stuff on my legs and I watched the evil little things land and get stuck. That's what I'm using from now on.

I am assuming that's a hairy legged person option! I'm not sure that would stop them on my leg.....

I use the cutter lemon eucalyptus on my feet and lower legs as well. As far as it interfering with sexy time we always shower rinse before any thing goes down, so the bug spray is fine for me. My husband doesn't have to use any at all. None of my friends have to use it either but I always do or I will get bitten.

We've generally had good luck with Avon Skin So Soft bug spray, and it's far less horrible to apply and wear all day than a lot of the heavy chemical stuff.

I am someone the bitey bugs love and have yet to find anything non-chemical that will work. I brought Ben's wipes the last several trips (very low odor) and bringing the REI jungle juice spray (also low odor and recommended by a hiker friend) next time. Got chewed up daytime in the dining room waiting for group peeps to arrive, but as long as I put the stuff on at night, they only get me after I get out of the hot tub later on.

We were there in March, but I think the sand fleas are active all of the time at dusk until post dawn on the beach. After getting badly bitten I took Benadryl pills and Benadryl cream. It seemed to help with the swelling redness and itch.
