What currency is accepted? What is the protocol for tipping - what is best for tipping?

US currency is accepted, Jamician is accepted, and if your talking about tipping the hotel staff that is a big no no.

tipping before and after hotel...bag handlers at airport, ride to resort, beer stop. US $$$...take lots of small bills...1's and 5's. If you purchase anything from a vendor...you will find they "don't have change Mon...Pick something else". so it's nice to be able to give exact change.

Feel free to tip the staff just do it very, very discreetly. Ive said this before and i will say it again. No one will ever tell me who i can and cant give my money to, period. If the recieving staff doesnt want it great then they will graciously decline. BTW in well over 50 tip offers at hedo ranging from the upper managment to the guys who scrub the hottubs no one and i mean no one has ever said no......

Thank you! I appreciate the input.

I agree as far as not telling a person they can't tip!

Here's the offical word from the Hedo web site on tipping (NO tipping is their rule).
    http://www.hedonism.com/what-is-hedo...m-resort-faqs/

    And on the currency

Word has it that accepting tips at the resort is a reason for termination of employment.

If an employee is caught accepting a tip, they can be fired on the spot. Unfortunately they are human just like all of us and are always tempted to try and get away with accepting it. In Jamaica, if they are fired for any reason, it goes on their employment. Unlike the US, that employment record follows them from employer to employer. Getting fired for breaking a rule such as not accepting tips, can prevent them from getting another job in the hospitality industry. Harry Lange, the current owner, has stated that as a guest, prior to buying the property, knew the rules and never offered a tip. The resort does take a percentage of each week's sales and funds a tipping pool for EVERY employee, not just the ones you see. Someone such as a bartender can get a share of a weekly pool equal to their salary. Bye staying at the resort, you are already tipping every employee when you pay your daily room rate.

Joe while i always respect your input on matter we have to agree to disagree. Adopting the attitude that you are doing them a favor by not tipping them because they are to simple or have no self control to resist is insulting to them all in my opinion. You explain the rules of future employment to us as though they themsleves have no idea? (i might add that this no tipping policy is in no way unique to Jamaica) Again insulting to the people who work there. They are adults who are more than capable of declining a tip and who should rightly do so if offered in a public half assed way. I assure you no one has been, or ever will be fired by one of my tips. They would quite literally have to go turn themsleves in. I will continue to stand by my assertation that no one will ever tell me who i will offer my hard earned money to.
Again just my personal opinion. And as far as other employess being left out, I make it a point to offer monetary gifts to those who might otherwise be missed. And not for nothing but a good tip will always garnish better future service.

You seem set in your ways and I by no means am here to change them, the temptation is there for you to offer the tip, and I'm glad you are offering to those who might be missed, your words. The person that washes your sheets, or the person who Cuts the fruit in the morning, or maybe the person that cleans the playroom at 4am when all is said and done, or the office personal who answers the phones The behind the scenes people. Since you are spreading the wealth you didn't miss them right? the policy is set so that people on vacation are not stopped every few seconds and asked for a little something, and so everyone is treated. The same, no one gets a Better drink or a better seat at dinner Ect... The policy of a tip bonus is in place so no one is missed. Now there are people such as your self , that will offer that temptation and it is very easy to offer it because all you will loose is a few dollars, what you might be taking from that person is their livelihood , for a few bucks, and the hopes of a faster drink in some people's eyes. But as you said no one will tell you what to do with your money

    With all due respect.
Perhaps the solution here, Dannyboy, would be for you to contribute your hard earned cash to the resorts weekly “Tip Pool” for an equitable distribution to all employees. That way everybody would share in your benevolence, and no-one would accuse you of favoritism or attempting to garner a more favourable advantage in the future. As well as following resort policy.
    Respect mon.

Is this possible? I know we have discussed it here several times. I wish they would allow this.....

Philly girl we have in the past gone to upper management with a blanket gift for staff which has always been excepted, However you have to trust that they will divide it fairly. It also kind of takes away the personal gratification we get from knowing the needs of the individuals we meet.
If you choose to do this just be sure you are completely discrete. As Joe pointed out a careless gift can cost them.

As a matter of fact the list of people that you have mentioned are indeed among those that i have helped. I also contribute to the local schools, in fact my corporation donates over $12,000.00 per year in school supplies. long before i ever made my first visit to Hedo. I know vey well the struggles of the people who work here and would never jeapordize there job, which is why i am very careful. and again you disrespect them by taking away there ability to refuse. and even if they do not except your offer they can at least be assured of your gratitude. If you count yourself among those people who have visited distressed countries and have been pestered by those asking for tips then my only question for you is why did you have to be asked in the first place, exercise some philanthropy and it will come back to you 10 fold at some point in your life. I did not question Joe's ethics but it appears you have questioned mine while knowing absolutely nothing about me. I take a sincere interest in the employees my wife and i meet and what i do is help them have a just a little bit better life for their families. I expect nothing in return but often do recieve it regardless. And in response to your snide reminder about not being told what i will do with my money ....well you nailed it right on the head. I find that people who are so objectionable to giving are usually the ones that never have. As you can see i have made several assumptions about you and i have never met you. I am no doubt wrong on most accounts but iregardless it doesnt feel good does it.
I did not post here to start an argument but i dont think new comers should be told what they can and cant do with their own money. They should be made aware of resort policies and left to decide for themselves what they will do.

My intent is to tip whoever makes a positive impact on my trip... discreetly as needed. I have been to many resorts where tipping is "not allowed" but no one has every once refused a tip .. more like they bounce up and down in thanks ..regardless of any debate do whatever you feel is comfortable
