there appears to be no motive other than a random shooting!

It's been discussed a bit on the Facebook page. Agreed, Jamaica has a ridiculously high murder rate.
Does anyone know where this guy was when this happened? All I see is west end

It has been a very bad day here near Orlando. Radical Islamic Terrorist killed more than 50 people and more than 50 hospitalized. We have an even larger problem than Jamaica. Be safe wherever you travel....our community is not viewed favorably by those that want to spread terrorism.
While we do have a ridiculously high murder rate that suggests deeper structural problems in Jamaica, LEO friends and statistics inidcate that our violent crime is over 70% "Domestic" - ie. the parties involved harming one another are connected somehow and thus our random violence rates are minimal. So we should not fear walking in the streets or visiting restaurants etc.
The way this case is described makes it sound like a hit as the victim's girlfriend and father escaped harm. Nonetheless, ANY loss of life is tragic.

On the Negril web site it was said that this was a robbery gone wrong,
From what I just read, the Jamaican police state "There was no evidence that robbery was the motive". The victim, a 35 year old Toronto realtor, was walking with his girlfriend and his father when two men on a motorbike pulled up and shot him and then sped off.
So a tourist gets shot and killed and they're concerned about illegal motorcycles? I think they're missing the big picture here.
Many of the recent "incidents" in Westmoreland and Hanover were initiated by 2 thugs attacking from a motorcycle as those are very easy to zip into the bush and avoid pursuit. A huge, huge, huge number of motorcycles are not registered (no plates, no insurance), and a huge number of those "owners" are not licensed to operate the bikes.
So to focus on illegal bikes is, for me, and excellent step in getting this danger off the road (for a variety of reasons), and just maybe the folks on the bike may be some of the thugs the police is looking for.
For example, just a few days ago, there was a shooting on the main road near the village of Cousins Cove. Details: at night, a car with 3 people came upon a car accident with two folks in that car. The approaching car stopped to give aid and as they approached the accident, two thugs popped up and shot the 3 folks giving aid. All three were hit. The gunmen escaped on a motorcycle. One of the three that stopped to give aid was good enough to drive for medical aid and notify the police. When the police arrived to the accident, they discovered that the two folks in the accident car had be fatally shot.
So a focus on these motorbikes seems relevant.

Interesting to see moree info on the motorbike thing, thanks passion..
sometimes i think that with random acts of violence, random is the best word.. sometimes its like a wrong place, wrong time situation.. though foresight would advise to be careful in certain arreas..
I did some research and it costs $12,000 per year to have a licensed firearm in Jamaica. Not sure what a license for a motorbike is but it can't be that high.In any event you can't blame guns or motorbikes whether they were legal or not.,It sounds like two psychopaths are loose indiscriminately killing people and using the bike to elude the authorities.
Remember, that is JA$12,000 which is about US$100.
