Hedo for the first time, but definitely not the Last!

Well as promised a trip report from our first Hedo trip!

    The Journey

This started with a 4 hour drive down to Gatwick airport and an overnight stay as no way did we want to miss our flight. So we arrived at our chosen hotel and all seemed fine. We had researched the local area and found online a nice quaint traditional English pub which had great reviews for its ales and food. This was where we first headed after dumping our stuff in the room. The beers and wines flowed freely and we had a lovely meal, so at approximately 10pm we decided to hit the sheets. This is where the nightmare started. The bed was terrible and neither of us had more than an hours sleep. Well not to put a downer on or holiday we got up dressed and headed down for breakfast, the breakfast was very good and although we were shattered we decided that we would just sleep on the plane. The cunning plan was that we would be fully awake to start our Hedo party once arrived. On checking out and getting the bus to the airport the nice lady behind the desk did ask if everything was ok, we told her the bed was not very good to which she replied that everyone complains about the beds. We won’t stay there again!
We arrived at the airport in plenty of time, and settled to wait for our flight; this was when we met the first people from the forum. So the chatting started and what a lovely couple (Si&Jane).
Well we finally boarded the plane and eventually took off but we were about 1 hour late in departing England.
Well the flight seemed like it was taking forever but eventually we landed in Montego Bay, but we were held up again and so far 2 hours of our precious hols had been delayed lol.
Well the security and immigration was a breeze and finding the transport desk was great too. So off to the bus and a few minutes wait and once everyone was aboard we were off. The bus was full of people but all were going to Hedo. I took it that that was a good sign.
Well we arrived and checked in and this would be the first night of a wonderful ten days holiday.

    The Room

We were escorted to our room by one of the staff and he showed us the bar area on the way and explained a couple of things. Once in the room he showed us the telly and kept showing us the telly, this is where we realised the stories about no Tipping are a little different, as soon as he had been given a tip he left straight away. Not wanting to put anyone off but this did happen. Our room was a little dated but clean and would suffice for the week as we didn’t plan being in the room very much. Lisa decided she would take a shower and freshen up before venturing out, so she hopped into the shower and was having problems turning the heat down. We both struggled to have a shower as the water was scolding hot. We did however manage and reported it the following morning. To which the staff at the desk were very apologetic and said it would be fixed ASAP. Credit where it’s due it was done that day.

    The Bars

Well what can one say other than excellent with generally quick service, the choice of drinks were fantastic. However we did at times have to wait a few mins while some people just wandered up and were served straight away. This will become more apparent later on in this report to the reasons why. The best bar for us was the Nude pool bar, with late night drinks and snacks been served very quickly.

    The Food and Restaurants

Well there was so much choice and all the food we had was cooked perfectly, the choices were fantastic and covered a huge range of tastes. I don’t think there was any bad food. We did not try the Harry San as for us this does not fit with both of us. We did however try the Italian and this is where they went and pleased us so well. We ordered pasta in which Sean does not like mushrooms and this is where it was no trouble at all to prepare the dish without. So for us a 100% perfect score.

    The Entertainment and Dressing up

For us this was a going to be a big part of our holiday, as we had spent months getting all our stuff to wear and we did try very much each night. But as has been explained in another post not everyone dresses up. The ladies seem to be more inclined to dress up than the men. But we did still try and did enjoy some nice compliments from some of the guests. The one thing that does take some of the fun out of the dressing up is no matter how hard you try and how good your costume is, you will never win a competition if there is a large group in the room who has one of their attendees entering as they will always cheer for their own! The entertainment was in our view very good with Winston and his team working tirelessly to make sure everyone enjoys this. Our only fault was that the band had a singer that came on after the main showcase had finished, and it did slow it down and seemed at times like he was trying to send everyone to sleep. We usually departed after the main showcase and went to the Piano bar where the singing and Karaoke was always entertaining. The nightclub is a bit disappointing as it’s so dark in the bar area and most of the laughs are actually outside, where the people just seem to gather and listen to the music and chat.

    The Beach

We can only really comment on one beach as we only went to the Nude side, the first part of our holiday was fantastic as there was always plenty of room, no one was reserving any beds and the brollies and foam floats were plentiful. But as one week ended and another group moved in it became a different story, we had actually had an early night, as we had been partying so hard so a mid holiday rest was needed. Well the morning after the early night we were up very early so we decided early to breakfast and straight to the beach. We were on the nude side at approximately 8am this was when we realised that bed reserving was now going to be Key to a good spot. There were beds reserved and most had the floats put on them and the towels put on top so as to keep both. We managed and just sort of accepted it. As this does happen in other parts of Europe where we have holidayed before. What was the worst bit is they had floats on the beds and then went into the water with the spares they had kept at the side of them. Which in our view is a little bit selfish. Some of these beds were never used as they just came down and went straight into the pool. But apart from that the rest of the nude side was great.

    The People and Forum Members.

During our stay we met plenty of people and some who hopefully we will stay in touch with. The forum members we met are Si&Jane, WalterandMay and finally the OddCpl All of which we had a blast with. Such nice people and this always makes for a better holiday. Everyone we spoke to around the resort was very friendly and this does make this a special place. We feel we must mention the Rachals Rascals, where we met Rachal and her partner and lots of the others and all of these guys were around our age and loved to party till the early hours. Hopefully we will be back with these guys and girls next year!

    The Watersports

Now now not what you are thinking! We are actually referring to the sailing and Kayaking that we did and this was of course first class again with the staff very helpful. And of course included in the price. We had a couple of days sailing and did we enjoy it! So much so that Lisa is now going to be taking sailing lessons in the near future.

    The Tipping

We feel that to make this a true report we must say what we saw. The tipping is very common throughout the resort as we said earlier in our report some details would become very apparent, we stood at a couple of the bars waiting patiently when we had been acknowledged but suddenly someone else turned up and was served immediately. This usually followed with a little hand shake and the Barman’s hand immediately went into his pocket. This didn’t really bother us we just waited a couple more mins and were served. Also we spoke to a couple of people who told us they tipped the maids each day by leaving a few dollars on the bed, and also one lovely lady who told us she was upset that she had missed the drinks server during dinner as she tips everyone. On a positive note one guest told us she had tried to tip Winston but he told her it was against the rules and had declined her, saying I have to keep telling the other staff not to accept so how can I accept a tip.
If the owners really don’t want tipping they should tell everyone coming in at check in and also make the guests responsible, how they could do this is not for this report, but a locked box at the front desk and a plain envelope for you departure and to be shared out evenly would be very nice. Then everyone would be treated the same!

    The Return

I hope you didn’t think we were going to tell you about our return journey home! What we are talking about is our return to Hedo, yes apart from a couple of little things our holiday was perfect. We will however look at the groups and the ages before booking and hopefully we will have another time as good as this one.

I hope we have not offended anyone with our report but we can only write as we find.

    Regards

    Lisa + Sean

    Great report.

As for the "Lounger Savers" I am the lounger redeemer, I bring salvation to neglected loungers. Hallelujah!

I have seen loungers being saved for people who are no longer at the resort and I just don't put up with it anymore. If they are not in use they will soon be. We don't smoke and having to dodge the smokers and the savers all at once is not worth the trouble. It's our vacation too and we are paying top dollar for amenities, so we will use the amenities that we are paying for.

Outstanding trip report Lisa and Sean and thanks for taking the time to write it up and share with us. It is always nice to get a newbies perspective and something we can all pass on to those in our groups that are or will be newbies also.

    Brilliant report Lisa+Sean!

Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive report. Sorry to read that your trip got off to a bit of a wonky start but seems you recovered very nicely. I doubt if the clandestine tipping will ever stop completely and I like the idea of a tip box in the lobby.

The lounge saving situation certainly needs to be addressed by management..."use it or lose it".

Yup! I totally agree with all of this. I would comply witht the locked box tip solution and it makes it truly voluntary. I want staff to get tips but it really is a hassle to have all those dollar bills on hand all the time when you're nude! Maybe you could write some of the staffers you intend it to go to and even though the pool is divided up, people who are frequently thanked for excellent service could get a larger tip out.

Bravo for your bravery and sense of practicality. Has anyone confronted you about "stealing," "their," chair?

Savers tend be pretty shocked indignant. But again, most of the time more than half of the loungers are empty "being saved" so either the savers find another lounger to save or we redeem another lounger. It's so silly to have a beach full of empty loungers.

    It's their vacation too.

I would support a "bonus box" for the staff.A huge disparity exists between those who have interaction with guests and those who don't.The unsung people who do heavy lifting behind the scenes are just as important and deserving. That would solve a lot of problems for guests and staff alike.Just one old man's opinion.......

Great trip report. I myself have suggested a lock box out front several times. I think it would be more fair and most who want to tip would use it.

Glad you guys had a great trip and wish we had met up with you when we were there. Nice to see someone else post comments on the lounger/float saving issue that started after Rachel's Rascals left and the next group came in that Saturday/Sunday. Funny how most of the saving was in the area where the new group banners were flying...and in the shade.

We did not see any tipping at the bars as you did. We did leave a Godiva chocolate bar (with $$ tucked inside) for housekeeping service. We do think a tip jar on departure would be a good idea.

Here's a thought.Use whatever unoccupied lounger you want.If the "owner" shows up and gets confrontational just explain you were "guarding" it for them and now you expect at least a small gratuity! That should be a real ice breaker.....

Lounger redeemer just made my day! I usually try to take one near someone who is sitting, saying if they return, just have them yell and I'll be right back. No problems.

    Great report!

We have yet to encounter float or lounger hogs on any of our trips. We usually don't make it to the pool/beach till after noon and we usually are standing in the pool or around the bar most of the day though...

Regardless, that behavior is selfish and ridiculous and you have my allegiance as a fellow Lounger Redeemer!
