We spend a lot of time during the day, in the shade on the beach, something is biting us, flees I think. Maybe this mosquito issue will motivate the resort to install screens on the bathroom louvers.

On the other hand, I've seen very few mosquitoes at Hedo.

I can see all the resorts playing this down, it could really hurt attendance.

We live down South in the land of mosquitoes. Many of the locals swear by a product called Avon Skin So Soft which mosquitoes and ticks etc do not like.I see a product at the grocery store called No Gnats which is an all natural repellent for most bugs.I like Deet applied to my clothes like shoes and socks, hat, pant cuffs, etc but would think twice about slathering down in it.All that said,I have not really noticed "bugs" while at Hedo which I find quite surprising since we are in the Tropics.

Avon's Skin So Soft is awesome. Truly works and smells much better than Off.

Living in the south amongst the skeeters we have tried many things! Skin So Soft does work well and keeps your skin soft too! Guys usually don't like it though, because it smells girly. I now use Repel, it's toxic free and all natural.

If you check mosquito repellent lab tests you will find the "home remedies" work for a very short time only. DEET is the only proven treatment and it must be reaplied every few hours. If I am worried about West Nile etc... I know what I would use. But, whatever floats your boat.

When we were in St. Martin we discovered a product called Mosquito Milk - Tropical Version, the "noseeums" (tiny flee like mosquitos) were vicious and I think I was on their gourmet list. The product worked beautifully but I have not seen it available in Canada. Perhaps it is only available in the islands?

Mosquito milk is available on line here.
    http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/brands/mosquito-milk-2n2

It is spoken of positivly on Trip Advisor Here
    http://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-...Milk-Cuba.html

However, Deet content is only 20%. The list of insects it deters, is similar to the list on something we bought locally at a sporting goods store, for less money. You can get other products with higher Deet content.
But the concept of a "roll On" and then only a single stripe or two on the body, does sound good.

Thanks for the information. We really liked the roll on, very easy to use and there was no smell. The packaging on the website looks very different from the one we purchased, however, maybe they have rebranded. We purchased ours at a pharmacy in French St. Martin so that also explain the difference in packaging. Anyway, the stuff worked great.

I have never even seen mosquitos at Hedo in March, just tiny black ants once in a long while. The resort does of good job of spraying for bugs early in the morning (around 6:00 a.m.) when most guests are asleep.

There are mosquitos that can carry Dengue Fever which can be deadly. In 2012 there were 4 cases in the Florida Keys and epidemic in the Caribbean. The Doctor on the resort thought I had it. There are 4 strains and if you get one you can't get that again but you can contract one of the other three. No cure no vaccine's exist. Only supportive care like hydration by IV. It affected my blood pressure plummeting, affecting kidneys and swelling legs up to my knees. My bad never had to use Deet but I will next April. I got back to the states and could not get a confirmation of it. So I can't say for sure what made me so sick that year. I did fall asleep on the beach one night and may have been bitten although I had not bite mark. Could have been a spider. God only knows and I am glad I survived..

I wonder if the deet will wash off in the pool. Will we have to spray ourselves 20 times a day?

Avon's Skin So Soft is now available with Picaridin. Picaridin is similar to DEET in effectiveness, but less stinky and less irritating to the face. Bringing tons for LoveVooDoo Nov. 8th.
