Desire Resorts
Hello,
We've been to Desire Riviera Maya twice (in 2008 and 2010). We also went to Desire Pearl in 2012. All of our visits were for either seven or eight nights.
Here's our take:
We prefer the restaurants & dining at Riviera Maya.
We very much prefer the pool at Pearl.
We prefer the beach at Pearl.
We prefer the hot tub at Pearl, however we really like the seclusion of the hot tub at Riviera Maya.
We prefer the hot tub swim-up bar at Riviera Maya because it is bigger and it can be accessed from the water or from land.
The entertainment coordinators are equally awesome at both places!
We love the lobby bar at Riviera Maya and really hope that Desire does something like that at Pearl. The green pond does not do anything for us.
We slightly prefer the disco at Riviera Maya. Pearl's is too lit up.
We highly prefer the playroom at Riviera Maya. Pearl's is inadequate in comparison and used as a changing room for the entertainment people, which does not make for a good vibe.
Rooms are better at Pearl.
Bottom Line: The perfect vacation for us would be hanging out at Pearl's pool all day long, then late afternoon at the Pearl hot tub... then shower and head over to Riviera Maya for dinner, lobby bar entertainment, disco, playroom, lobby bar pizza... then finally finishing off the night at the hot tub. Now if only we could somehow now be teleported back to our bed at Pearl!!
Hey, we can dream, right?
They're both incredible places. We can't figure out why Pearl can't get their pizza like RM's. Pearl's pizza is good... but RM's is just better.
Please understand that Pearl was still pretty new when we were there in 2012. Some things have changed for the better... like free WiFi now, from what we've heard. However, I think there is still a charge to use the stream room or sauna, which is uncalled for.
Final note, if there is indeed a new $150 charge to hop from one Desire to the other, that will be a major deterrent from us going back there. We can understand some kind of access charge to spend a day at the other place, but the amount they are allegedly asking is robbery.
Feel free to ask us to elaborate on anything specific, either here, or PM.

Incredible paradises we've had the pleasure of experiencing:
Couples Negril - Couples Sans Souci - Grand Lido Braco (RIP) - Hedonism III (RIP)
Desire Riviera Maya - Hidden Beach Resort - Desire Pearl - Hedonism II
Pearl is a great resort (we've done a few day trips there), but its just does not have the traditional "Desire" atmosphere most of the time. Pearl with the right takeover group would be great, outside of that, in our opinion its just a fun day trip option (and at $150, we aren't doing that anymore either).
We loved the now closed Cabo location too. It was a great size. By the end of the week you knew most of the people at the resort. It was also much easier to get to from the West Coast.
Totally agree about Desire's change in policy re visiting between the two Desire properties and the new charge of $150 per day visit...it is total robbery. We have visited many all-inclusive resorts that allow visits between sister properties at no charge and can't understand why Desire has to be any different. And the reason they are giving, about each resort having a separate budget and needing to be able to compensate for additional service, food and drinks, etc. is absurd. If you are leaving one resort to visit the other then you are not eating, drinking or being served at the one you left, so it really should all balance out. Perhaps they should either find a way to balance their budgets between the resorts without charging customers, or else give the guest a credit voucher to cover cost of food and drinks at the resort you are visiting. This new policy has upset many long time customers and will do nothing to increase Pearl's popularity and occupancy if RM guests now have to pay $150 just to go see Pearl, or vice versa. Fortunately we have split our time between Pearl and RM when we visit in June, so we'll get to experience them both, but we will never pay $150 for a day visit on future trips.
DesireRep... love to hear what you have to say about this new $150 charge per day visit policy. Hopefully Desire management is listening to what they customers are saying about this!
We stayed at both two weeks ago. Desire RM is our fav. The people, service, and vibe at RM were just better. Pearl's facilities are great but it was just not run like RM. Take the staff and guest from RM and move them to Pearl, that would make perfection.
Totally agree with NLHottie for all the reasons already mentioned. Occupancy at Pearl is not good and this does nothing to help. This is also totally disrespectful of your guests who have already paid a significant ( and ever increasing) amount of money with you.
DesireRep you're very good at asking questions and posting hype but not responding to legitimate concerns like this. When will this charge be eliminated?
Disappointing to read about that surcharge. Our last trip to Desire was in 2012, at Pearl. Hedo2desire sums it up very well. The pond at Pearl was a waste of space that attracts bugs and sorry but the broom closet off the disco did not qualify as a playroom. We went for 10 days, with a group that was there for 7, and thank god we could go to RM as the place was dead.
The big advantage of Pearl over RM was that nobody bothered us for timeshare/club membership. The two tier service at RM was very annoying and a major reason why we enjoy Hedo so much.
Not saying we would not go back (with the right take-over group) but getting rid of the surcharge and treating your guests equally would go a long way. Providing feedback to our posts would also help.
Or, you could buy into the time share to get the better service and then have them close the resort on you. We sat through the presentation at Desire Los Cabos in late 2012 and even considered buying in (it was a great place). Not 6 months later they closed the place down (after repeatedly denying it was even for sale). We had some friends that owned there - it was a mess.
We would NEVER consider buying into the Original resorts scheme (we don't trust the ownership for several reasons).
Like you, we will probably be back someday though - there just aren't that many options.
Thank you very much for your feedback, this is very helpful to increase our service quality. I'll pass this information to the to the right person, and if there's a change in our policies about the 150 usd, I will let you know for sure.
Also thanks for letting us know about your friend's bad experience at Desire Los Cabos and about the presentation, and we are sure of that will never happen again.
About the groups, you can see at our website which groups will be at our resorts and also the dates, If you want to know more information about the group, also there's a little description of them and feel free to ask if we have more information.
Again thank you all for your comments, and if you need something or have other question or comment don't hesitate to contact us.
