If you're worried about roaming charges when making calls in Jamaica etc., It's very inexpensive to take an old phone with you, have it unblocked, a new chip and buy local and international minutes. We took an older IPhone 3 that we had sitting around and had it unblocked by a gentleman in Negril. We then purchased Digicel service which we can reload online when needed. Our particular phone costs $50.00 to unblock and rechip. 1000 international minutes and 30 local minutes costs roughly $12.00. Now we can use the phone back here in Canada to call out of country for cheap, and while in Jamaica. We were able to call/text our kids without extra charges.
On our way to Rick's Cafe we dropped the phone off and on the way back we picked it up. The gentleman's name is Andre. Shop #11 Negril Shopping Centre, Negril Square. (He is located as you come around the bend at the cliffs in the building next to Burger King. He's on the upper floor, top of the stairs above the beauty supply store. Phone number (1-876-408-8633). Incidentially the beauty supply shop is a very economical place to buy shampoo's, sun screen, nail polish, high end perfume and cologne etc.
Footnote: once the phone is unblocked you're free to use any provider anytime so you don't necessarily have to stay with Digicel if you find a better deal later.
