    Hedo Trip May 2013

Trip was uneventful except that JetBlue has changed their schedule to later in the day and we did not like that. We did use Rocky’s Taxi and Tour service to and from the airport, MoBay to Negril, and that was great. Rocky’s rates are $70 each way for up to 4 people (total – not each person). That’s much less than everyone else. I have a link to his web site at www.jwst.com on the “Links” page.

Resort welcome was as usual, except we now had to fill out the reservation forms at the front desk on check-in that we used to get from the SuperClubs lounge in MoBay.

One of the main reasons that Hedo went downhill in the last two years is because SuperClubs stopped funding the resort at anything more than basic levels. That’s why food quality, towels, rooms etc. were less than satisfactory, and equipment was not replaced. They were getting ready to sell and wanted to maximize profits.

The new management has taken complete control now and they have a plan in place to bring the resort back up to it’s old standards. They have a good budget and are already at work. They are spending money to restore the resort. A number of initiatives are in the works already, but have not happened as yet because it takes time to get supplies from out of the country such as new pool floats (already ordered). The soft drink kiosk by the nude pool has been extended and they have installed a new commercial ice machine, so ice will no longer have to be carried from the main buildings. The Nude grill is to be extended to allow them to install new pizza ovens. Everywhere you look, there are workmen painting, hammering and even replacing the paving stones in the sidewalks around the nude hot tub. Hot water was plentiful every day.

They have contracted with an outside design firm who will recommend changes to the room décor. They plan to gut a room (or rooms) completely and start from scratch with cost estimates. Once a design is decided upon, they will begin to redo blocks of rooms as they able to do so. I expect that may take 12 to 18 months.

WiFi is greatly improved and reception was excellent. You can now subscribe to the service for a daily fee of $15.00 but it decreases slightly if you buy a package for several days or the week.

Some pretty major personnel shifts have taken place with many new managers in place, almost all new E/C’s (except for Hennessy, Winston and Nick), and many new waiters/waitresses and bartenders. Service is fast an attentive. E/C’s are very visible and active. On two days last week, there were 7 of them at the nude pool organizing games, etc.

The Piano Bar is doing well with Eldon still the head bartender and a new entertainer named Kumar. Kumar is doing a great job and everyone seemed to like him. He’s got a terrific personality, laughs a lot but keeps everyone involved. He’s a big improvement over all of his predecessors, including Deon.

There is a new executive chef and food quality etc. is much better. All the bars are well stocked. Service is superior.

The Gift shop has been restocked and is now run by the GM’s wife, Mrs. Levee. They had a nice selection of things and she plans to grow that with a wider selection of clothing in the coming months (shipping issues again). She has also added a wine bar in the main dining room where you can purchase select wines by the bottle for dinners. Selection was very good (she is really a wine connoisseur herself). Prices ranged from $20 to $200 per bottle and included a wide selection from the US and other countries.

All in all, we were very impressed. We had a couple of long conversations with the GM, met with many of the new managers and had a couple of conversations with the new Chairman of the Board. We feel they are headed in the right direction and have a plan to get there. We don’t expect everything to get fixed overnight for sure (it is Jamaica after all) but we do feel they will get to where they want to take it.

We are looking forward to our next big trip in September.
