I have been tanning for 6 weeks now and I leav for Hedo 2 weeks from tmw (OMG!!) . I am only doing it for the trip. I was SCARY white and would have fried in the carribean sun.
I prefer to think of it as an indoor bake rather than a fake bake. Fake would be a spray on that looks fake rather than a booth tan that is actually a tan. We use the booth for both the winter blahs and so things have a head start before our winter travels.
I start tanning about two week before love it and i don't burn.
I get a base tan because otherwise I fry. I fried the first year no matter how much I bathed in SPF 1 million. I was reapplying a LOT, staying mainly in the shade..hat. Fry. it was horrible! Since then I've gotten a base indoor tan, but still live in spf 1 million and lose a good bit of my tan.
The sun in the carribbean is ferocious, that whole equator thing. A good idea to tan prior, hell its mandatory!

It's a really good idea to tan before Hedo. Your naughty bits are not likely to see the light of day any other time. A bad burn could seriously mess up a perfectly wonderful Jamaican vacation. I have a membership and tan year round, not so much in the winter and alot more before Hedo. Hubby just tans to get ready for Hedo.

I wish I could but Dr says no go on fake tans... so I will just have to be very careful in the sun SPF 1 million, but then that doesnt help one private place now does it... LOL

i gradually go up in minutes. By June, I'll be up to 10 minutes 3xs a week (for 1 weeks!) You should ask your doctor which is worse, mega sunburn or 2.5 hours in a tanning bed over the course of 6 weeks. I'm in harrisburg and in the same boat. FRY CITY! make sure you follow the shade!
well we are gonna try 3 times a week till we go on 21st about 11 minutes a time we sunburned the last time we went to hedo spent 2 days in the room
I've been tanning the past 5 weeks to get ready...I'm pretty fair skinned and if I don't get a solid base tan, I'll burn to a crisp. the next 2 weeks I'm going to try to get there 6 more times at about 13 minutes each. Happy tanning!!

We started the tanning bed a couple of weeks ago for our upcoming trip. She tans a lot anyway, but there are parts of me that rarely see the sun. It would put a damper on the trip to get those parts badly burned on the first day there! I've also been "shading" those spots in the tanning bed a little too, just so that they can slowly get used to the rays. A friend told me to put it in a sock for a while until it gets used to it. I haven't tried that yet.
We tried it once, tried the spray tan too- prefer that- and we just keep reapplying the SPF 30 all day and never get burnt. We have a little color year round because we have such nice weather at home- just a matter of getting the bits un-luminous.

So are we the only people who read the post subject and thought "People who don't inhale"?
That aside - unless you work in a field all day wearing a banana hammock, building up a base tan whatever way you can is essential in the Jamaica sun. Mr. Locogringo is about as English / Irish / German as you can shake a stick at, and can develop a sunburn in the presence of a glow-in-the-dark football - He starts tanning at least a month in advance if not sooner. Mrs. Locogringo is blessed with more a bit more Mediterranean heritage, but even still she enjoys the comfort of bed tanning (her description: "Wwwaaarrrmmmm... Good!").
