Do you require a passport for the Fantesea cruise?

According to Carnival, this is a "closed loop cruise" and hence passports are not required but proof of US citizenship is. Has anyone taken this cruise without a passport or know of someone who has and did not have any problems?

Here is the site link to the USA info you need. As I read it you need a passport or passport card if the ship docks anywhere out side the USA. You read it all so you know what to do.
