Getting there on Friday is great, most of your new friends will be gone on the following Saturday night, as it's transitions day and everyone leaves, so that Sat/Sun could be lonely. If you'd like 9 days I'd suggest getting there on Thurs and leaving on Sat.

I travel quite a lot and there are tricks to finding the cheaper flights.
Bridge your stay over a Saturday night. That drops the price enormously. Businessmen travel out and back within the week so they can be home at week ends. Tickets that go out and back in the same week seem to have a premium.
Avoid the businessman commuter flights. Monday morning/Friday afternoon. Also early morning flights and late afternoon flights. Mid day and mid week is good.
A drive to the second closest air port to you might get a cheaper flight. A drive to Buffalo might get you a cheaper flight
Web sites, Skyscanner lets you see which airports you can fly from to a given destination. Also includes the budget airlines
