We've never done the Amigo's gift exchange, but with previous group trips we've been on, you get a gift for every one you bring. So bringing either one per couple or one each is generally acceptable.

We've flown AA every time. As others have stated, Miami Immigration & Customs totally sucks. However, coming from the western U.S., flying AA through Dallas is just as fast, and I&C is awesome there....
