I started watching for our July/August trip starting in October. Since then, the air from here in San Diego has not budged more that $6 total for two- Once I buy I stop looking, don't want to be kicking myself for not waiting. As a side note, our air was $658 pp on US Airways. We have paid as little as $375 when AJ was flying direct out of LA- those days are NEVER coming back I fear.

From Vancouver we booked 4.5 months out (arrive April 12) when Westjet had a sale. Two weeks later they dropped the price $100.00 per person. We had them rebook us at the lower price (for a fee). The price has been going up from there. It was almost double the last time I checked (last week). US Air (from Seattle) in Sept had the best deal for us before the Westjet sale, and add on's. We are basically at the same rate we've had for the last few years.
US Air has been slowly climbing to the point they are about $100.00 per person more than last fall.

We started watching USAirways for November shortly after November (we do this every year it seems....). The price was initially higher ($560-$630 pp round trip including tax depending on dates)...but started coming down again in February. Some friends called us about hitting the cliffs before Hedo, so we checked prices again and found they were $20 higher than what we paid for last November...so on Feb 29 we booked at $478 pp inc tax. Price for the same dates now is $534. I'd much prefer a lower rate, but with taxes at $150 or so pp, $328 isn't terrible (cheaper than flying to many of places in the US).
I've always wanted to be able to wait....but never do....we really only have 2 choices here in VT...USAirways or JetBlue and JetBlue is always MUCH more expensive. So basically, we keep an eye on the prices and when they are in the 'reasonable' realm we book...I know they might go down some...but generally not more than $100 a ticket once they get in the $300 range...at least for us. It's good to know the lowest they've been and kind of judge from that figure.

We have not flown on a personal trip in years, it's always paid in advance thru business. We are wondering if it's best to use priceline, orbitz, or just book straight thru airline? Any difference? Also if you wait until closer to your trip do you take a chance in getting stuck with crappy flight times?

Note -- Caribbean Air has cancelled flights with the option of flying a later day or getting your money back. Got totally screwed by them last year. Booked through expedia -- but they did not help.
Flight march 30 2012 -- booked Sept 2011 at 550 ea for 2.
Caribbean air Cancelled the flight on Feb 29 (or somewhere there)
Got this e-mail

Dear Expedia Traveler,
We have received notice from Caribbean Airlines that they have made significant changes that impact your itinerary. We must speak with you as soon as possible to discuss the airline's available options, which may be very limited.

I called and bitched -the options were fly on Saturday Mar 31 (and lose a day at Hedo) or get my cash back and rebook.
I rebooked at 760 ea x 2-- Us Air Down and Caribbean Air home.
Trip went fine and Caribbean Air is great service wise -- I just didn't take kindly to being cancelled on.
Not sure if that would happen with US air
These were direct flights out of Phila -I've heard it has happened elsewhere.
Safe Travels!
PS -- I am looking at booking my airfare now for next march -- price looks right
-
We put our deposit down for next year just 3 weeks after we came home. Depending on how life goes over the next 4 months we will look at our options on flights then.

I am using YAPTA to keep track of the flights that I currently want for our already booked February 2013 trip.

Not sure where you live in Va., but check airfare at different airports. Unless you live in western Va. you should have several options within 2 hours drive. We live in the Richmond area and sometimes drive to Dulles to save $ and get a better flight iten. Also I'm hearing some airlines are going to honor prices for 90 days from flight date.

We will look at YAPTA, thanks Joe. We do live in western Va. near Roanoke. The cost is around $700.00 per ticket for now.....OUCH!! We want to fly out as early as possible, so we can get to Hedo early in the day, looking to enjoy every second we can there. Hope the prices may come down, but who knows what will happen. Thanks again for the input.
-
You tell YAPTA what flights you want to track and it checks prices every day.

We found prices this morning that were within $5.00 pp of the lowest we had seen in months. Couldnt take it, we booked. Flight times are perfect for us. Arrive in Jamaica at 12:30pm!!
Thanks for all the tips!!

Just saw a few weeks ago reported somewhere that the "sweet spot" for many airlines price wise is 6 weeks out, on a tuesday or wednesday. I am too compulsive to wait that long. We booked in March for an August trip and since then it has gone UP about $100 pp. Glad we did not wait.

We are right there with you as far as compulsive. We booked through Orbitz, so if the price drops before we go then we get a refund check 6 to 8 weeks after our flight. Believe that when we see it, if it does drop. We didn't want to wait until month or so before because with the luck we have as far as things like that go, the tickets would probably double in price! Funny thing is if they did double in price we would have to sell one of our kids, But for sure we would be there.;)

Its great you would get money for your kids! We'd have to pay someone a lot to take ours.
