We read somewhere that we need to pack water shoes. Is this correct? And what's the reason?

Not a necessity but definitely a good idea.... Both my Wife and Myself have had the unfortunate experience of stepping on a Spiny Sea Urchin!! If we would have been wearing them on those occasions we wouldn't be sharing our past misfortune...So needless to say, we always pack them....

They are also good if you plan to go into the caves during the catarman snorkeling cruise. Sharp edges on the rocks.
We bought water shoes before our 1st trip. If we're in the ocean at Hedo, we're wearing water shoes. Never looked back and never worry about a spiny prick..........except of course the perf in the bushes spying us.
Seriously, a small investment to protect your vacation. We bought Speedo brand and they have served well.

If by chance you don't bring water shoes.... (As we forgot ours on the last trip) you can sign out a pair at the water sports hut... They have every size you could think of. You just sign the book with your room number and when you're finished and return then you sign them back in...

The urchins like to hang out in the nude beach area...I guess they are not dumb...lol.
The last few trips we have not brought watershoes...but we do bring cheap flip flops and wear the (mostly) when in the ocean on the nude side. The urchins like to hang out by the nude beach because it is calm water and has sea grass in areas that provides them cover and dinner. We try to avoid walking in the grass areas...if we need to go over one we swim. (use your arms...kicking with flip flops does not work well..
We also bring a small splinter out kit just in case.....we have never had to use it.
We also spend most of our time in the pool...no urchins there! (disclaimer...we are scuba divers and splash 1 or 2 times a day...we love the ocean)
